The EWL "WRESTLER OF THE WEEK"
for the week ended 11/21/99
Mark Angle of CLARION UNIVERSITY.
The selection for Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 21, 1999, was particularly difficult, because we had so many guys who were worthy of winning the award. With that in mind, the EWL Wrestler of the Week is Clarion University senior Mark Angle. Mr. Angle has had a fabulous mat career at Clarion, having won the EWL Tournament twice, having placed fourth and third in the NCAA Tournament, and having been selected the 1999 EWL Wrestler of the Year. Mark reached another mark last weekend (11/21/99) at the Clarion Duals, winning three matches at 141 pounds, the third being his 100th collegiate win. At the Duals Angle won two matches by mat termination and one by pin. Mark’s Century Win came against Dustin Ziegler of Pitt-Johnstown, by a 21-5 tech fall. Mark Angle’s career record at Clarion is a phenomenal 100-7. Congratulations to Mark Angle, our EWL Wrestler of the Week!
Yes, there were other EWL grapplers who deserve an Honorable Mention for their performances this past week. Bloomsburg University swept its Invitational Tournament (held 11/20/99 at Bloomsburg), winning seven weight classes. The Huskies were led by their 157-pound star Ed Hockenberry, who pinned four opponents in a cumulative time of 8:41, on his was to winning the Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler Award. Down south at the Navy Classic (held 11/20/99), West Virginia University won the team title, with five Mountaineers winning titles! Four of the WVU champs are seniors. The 149-pound winner, however, was redshirt freshman Billy Smith. Mr. Smith won a total of four matches on the day. In the finals Smith beat one of Navy’s best wrestlers Tyrone Neal by takedown in the overtime period (final score 7-5). Virginia Tech also wrestled at the Classic, crowning two champions. Rugged Sean Gray won the 141-pound title for the Hokies, beating Rutgers’ Tom Wysocki in the semis and Navy’s Mark Conley (by 5-3) in the finals. Cleveland State University attended the Eagle Open, held 11/20/99 at Ashland. There, the Vikings’ 174-pound sophomore Gerald Harris cobbled together four wins, including a major decision in the championship finals. Mr. Harris, a native of Oklahoma, has ten wins on the year.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR EWL CHAMPIONS!
