EASTERN WRESTLING LEAGUE WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Our EWL Wrestlers of the Week for the week ended February 21, 2010, are the Pittsburgh Panthers. On February 19 the Panthers won the EWL dual meet title for the 2010 season, by defeating Edinboro 21-13, to finish the EWL vs. EWL year undefeated at 6-0.
The Pittsburgh/Edinboro dual meet started at 125 pounds, with the Panthers' true freshman, Anthony Zanetta, upsetting Edinboro veteran Eric Morrill 4-1. Jimmy Conroy (133), Tyler Nauman (141), Eric Albright (149), and Donnie Tasser (157), followed Zanetta, each winning by decision. After Edinboro grabbed the next three weights, Matt Wilps (197) and Ryan Tomei (285 pounds) also won by decision, giving the Panthers seven bout winners and a total of 21 points on the score board.
Congratulations to the University of Pittsburgh head coach Rande Stottlemyer, all the members of the Pittsburgh wrestling team, and all of the Panther coaching staff!
Also, the EWL tips its headgear to Rick Schmelyun of Bloomsburg, who scored the most team points this season in EWL vs. EWL dual meet competition. Mr. Schmelyun tallied a total of 30 team points for the Huskies in Bloomsburg's six intra-league dual meets.
In addition, the EWL salutes Clarion University staff for their initiation (in 2009) and continuation of the National Collegiate Open wrestling tournament, held for the second time at Clarion on February 20, 2010. The event again was a success, and EWL wrestler Mike Rowe (West Virginia University) won the title at 149 pounds, and Josh Veltre (Bloomsburg) grabbed the crown at 165.
This is the final EWL Wrestler of the Week presentation for this season. The next Eastern Wrestling League event is the EWL Championship Tournament, to be held on March 7, 2010, at West Virginia University. See you there!
