EASTERN WRESTLING LEAGUE WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 23, 2008, is Zach Sheaffer.  Sheaffer, a senior at the University of Pittsburgh, competes at 285 pounds, and is from Carlisle, Pennsylvania.  Sheaffer is a two-time EWL champion, who has his sights set on NCAA All-Americanship this season.

On Sunday, November 23, 2008, the Pitt Panthers competed in the powerful Keystone Classic, at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Sheaffer grabbed the heavy weight crown by pinning his way through the tournament.  Zach flattened his Davidson College opponent in the opening round in 0:59 seconds, his Mercyhurst quarter-final foe in 4:40, and his VMI semi-final opponent in 4:50.  In the finals he pinned Penn's excellent heavy weight, Trey McLean, in 4:43.  In all, that's four falls in a little over 15 minutes.

Mr. Sheaffer's Homeric additions to the Pitt team score helped lead the Panthers to a strong second-place finish with 135.0 points.  The host Penn Quakers won the event by tallying 138.5 team points.  Besides Sheaffer, two other Pitt grapplers won titles at the Keystone Classic.  Jimmy Conroy, a junior, was victorious at 133 pounds, and true freshman Matt Wilps grabbed the gold at 197.

Good job Zach Sheaffer, our EWL Wrestler of the Week!
