EASTERN WRESTLING LEAGUE WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 2, 2008, is Gregor Gillespie.  Gregor is a senior at Edinboro University, competes at 157 pounds, and is from Webster, New York.  Further, Mr. Gillespie is a three-time EWL champion (once OW) and a three-time All-American, who won the 2007 NCAA Tournament, then competing at 149 pounds.

This past Saturday, November 1, 2008, Edinboro opened its wrestling season by hosting the Edinboro Duals.  In that event, Gillespie led the Fighting Scots, who are ranked 15th in the nation in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA poll, to three dual meet victories.  Edinboro opened with a 48-0 shutout over Findlay, then beat the EIWA’s Army by a score of 34-7, and concluded the day by besting the ACC’s best – the nationally ranked University of Maryland – by a final score of 23-14.  In those three matches, Gregor Gillespie tallied 15 team points, winning by a 10-0 major decision against Findlay, an injury default (Army), and a 16-0 tech fall in 4:39 versus his Terp opponent.  Gillespie’s college career record now stands at 111-9.

Good job Gregor Gillespie, our EWL Wrestler of the Week.

In addition, the EWL tips its hat (headgear?) to five other EWL wrestlers who represented our conference well this past weekend at the Eastern Michigan Open (held Nov. 1) and the Buffalo Open (on Nov. 2).  Eric Albright of the University of Pittsburgh won the Eastern Michigan Open at 141 pounds, and Jeremie Cook of Lock Haven University won that event at 184 pounds.  At the Buffalo Open, Paul Donahoe of Edinboro University grabbed the crown at 125, and Edinboro’s Garrett Scott took the title at 141 pounds.  Lock Haven’s Matt Fittery was victorious at 149 pounds.
