University of Pittsburgh's Drew Headlee

The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 19, 2006, is Drew Headlee, a junior from Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, who competes in the 133-pound weight class for the University of Pittsburgh.  Mr. Headlee, who redshirted this past season, is an NCAA All-American, having placed 8th in the 2005 NCAA Tournament for the Panthers.

This past weekend Headlee won the title in the prestigious Body Bar Systems Invitational Tournament, held November 18, 2006, at Cornell University.  In his first bout, Drew pinned his opponent from Drexel University, then in the quarter finals decisioned his Kent State foe by a score of 5-2.  In the semis Mr. Headlee grabbed an 8-7 barn-burner from William Simpson of the Army, then bested another Army grappler, Matt Kyler, in the championship finals 2-1.

By winning the crown, Headlee led the Panthers to a third-place finish in the ten-team event.  The Panthers tallied 98.5 points, just a step below Cornell University (115 points) and the University of Michigan (114).  Pittsburgh finished above Kent State, Army, Maryland, Drexel, Old Dominion, Sacred Heart, and Ithaca.  Head Coach Rande Stottlemyer was pleased with the results.

Congratulations to Drew Headlee, our Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week!

The EWL also would like to tip its headgear to the six EWL wrestlers who won titles at the Navy Classic and Ashland Open this past weekend, and to the Edinboro University wrestling team that defeated number 21-ranked Lehigh on November 19 at the Pennsylvania Duals.  The follow wrestlers won Navy Classic crowns:  Mike Sees of Bloomsburg at 125, Rickey Donald of Bloomsburg at 133, Brandon Rader of West Virginia at 141, Zac Fryling of West Virginia at 157, and Jared Villers of West Virginia at 197.  Cleveland State's Ryan Hurley took first place at the Ashland event, competing at 149 pounds.

Reigning EWL champ Edinboro University, that finished 8th last season at the NCAA Tournament, wrestled nationally ranked Lehigh at the Pennsylvania Duals held this year at Lock Haven University.  Lehigh has won the EIWA team title the past five years and is ranked 21st in the nation.  Edinboro took seven of the ten weights and bested Lehigh by a score of 26-9.  The individual winners for our Fighting Scots were:  Ricky Deubel at 133, Gregor Gillespie at 149, Matt Hill at 157, Deonte Penn at 165, Phil Moricone at 174, Alex Clemsen at 184, and Joe Fendone at 285.  Good job guys!
