Edinboro University's Matt Hill
The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 12, 2006, is Matt Hill, a senior from Freedom, Pennsylvania, who competes in the 157-pound weight class for Edinboro University. In case you missed it, this past Sunday (11/12/06), Mr. Hill helped drive the Edinboro tractor-trailer that ran over much of the field at the Michigan State Open. At the Open the Fighting Scots rammed five guys into the finals, winning a total of three titles, and placed three other grapplers in the top four.
Matt Hill, undefeated this season at 8-0 and having a break-out year, won five bouts to grab the crown at 157. He won his first bout by tech fall, grabbed a 4-3 win in his next match, then edged his Michigan State opponent 4-3 in the quarter finals. In the semi finals Matt had a huge win, decisioning Indiana University's Brandon Becker 5-3. Mr. Becker is ranked third in the nation at 157 pounds. (See WR.com Henry Rankings of 10/22/06.)
In the championship finals, Hill beat another nationally ranked wrestler, Chris Brown of Old Dominion University, by a score of 5-2. Here are the other Edinboro wrestlers who won, or placed high, in the Michigan State event: Rick Deubel (4th at 133 pounds), Gregor Gillespie (1st at 149), Deonte Penn (1st at 165), Phil Moricone (3rd at 174), Alex Clemsen (2nd at 184), Jim Gibson (3rd at 197), and Joe Fendone (2nd at 285).
Congratulations to Matt Hill, our Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week!
The EWL also would like to tip its headgear to two Bloomsburg University wrestlers who won titles at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Tournament this past weekend. Tony Curto finished first at 141 pounds and Aric Fuhrman grabbed the crown at 157. The Huskies placed a strong third in that eight-team event, behind Oklahoma University and Kent State. Good job guys!
Please come on out and support your favorite wrestling team this season. America needs wrestlers and wrestling!
Thank you.
