Bloomsburg University's Dennis Bermudez

The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended February 18, 2007, is Dennis Bermudez, a freshman from Saugerties, New York, who wrestles 157 for Bloomsburg University.  This past weekend Mr. Bermudez wrestled in two dual meets, racked up two nice wins, and helped lead the Huskies to two victories.

On February 16, Bloomsburg hosted Lock Haven University, and beat the Bald Eagles 24-9.  Bermudez grabbed a big win in that meet, downing highly ranked Seth Martin 9-7 by scoring a take down in sudden victory.  On February 18 the Huskies sledded over to East Stroudsburg and defeated the Warriors 30-9, with Bermudez racking up a solid 5-1 decision over Ben Bishop.  The two wins raise Bermudez' season W/L record to 22-15.

Congratulations to Dennis Bermudez, our EWL Wrestler of the Week!

The EWL also would like to tip its headgear to the Edinboro University wrestling team and Deonte Penn.  This past weekend Edinboro racked up dual meet wins over West Virginia and Pittsburgh, thus winning the EWL dual-meet championship with an intra-league record of 6-0.  In addition, the two wins elevated the Fighting Scots' season dual-meet record to 17-1.  Edinboro currently is ranked sixth in the nation (NWCA Coaches' Poll) and has won 30 of their last 31 dual meets.

Deonte Penn, Edinboro's 165 pound NCAA All-American, completed his six intra-league dual meets undefeated, gaining five pins and one forfeit.  Thus, Penn tallied a total of 36 team points in EWL competition and wins the award for most points scored.  (Mr. Penn will be presented with the EWL team-point trophy at the conclusion of the 2007 EWL Tournament.)

The EWL Tournament is coming up March 3-4, 2007, at Cleveland State University, and we look forward to seeing you there!  Thank you.

[Ed. Note:  This is the final EWL Wrestler of the Week selection for the 2007 season.]
