Edinboro University's Joe Fendone
The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 5, 2006, is Joe Fendone, a sophomore from Massachusetts, who competes in the 285-pound weight class for Edinboro University. This past Saturday (11/4/06), Mr. Fendone helped the Fighting Scots kick-off their 2006-07 wrestling season by leading them to three dual-meet victories in the Avalon Duals. The event was held in the ballroom of the Avalon Hotel in Erie, PA, a short drive from the Edinboro campus.
Edinboro entered this past weekend with a dual-meet winning streak of 13 matches, facing Stanford University, Mercyhurst, and the University of Maryland. The Scots ended the day with a 16-match winning streak, defeating Stanford 30-7, Mercyhurst 36-3, and Maryland 28-12. In those three meets, Fendone racked up a total of 15 team points with an 18-1 tech fall against Stanford, a first-period pin against Mercyhurst, and a 12-1 major decision versus Maryland.
Last season Fendone was PSAC champion, EWL runnerup, and competed in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, but did so down at 197 pounds. This fall Joe could not certify that low, and competes at heavy weight. Edinboro head coach Tim Flynn said that he was anxious to find out how Joe would do wrestling up at heavy weight this season and was pleased with his decisive Avalon results. Coach Flynn remarked that Fendone is a very hard worker, will keep improving, and is on his way to a very good year.
Congratulations to Joe Fendone, our Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week!
The EWL also would like to tip its headgear to its 11 grapplers who won titles in open competition this past weekend. In that regard, the following six EWL'ers won championships at the West Virginia Open: Doug Rader of WVU at 141 pounds; David Jauregui of WVU at 149; Matt Kocher of Pittsburgh at 157; Derrick Morgan of Lock Haven at 174; Jared Villers of WVU at 197; and Matt Holsopple of WVU at 285.
