Edinboro University's Gregor Gillespie
The EWL wrestler of the week for the week ended November 6, 2005, is Edinboro University's Gregor Gillespie. Gillespie, a New York State high school champion, is a true freshman, who is competing at 149 pounds.
This past Saturday (November 5th) Mr. Gillespie steam rolled his way through the Eastern Michigan Open, winning five bouts and claiming the title at 149. Gregor won his first match at the event by tech fall, then pitched a 9-0 shutout in his second bout. In the quarter finals Gillespie beat nationally ranked John Cox of Navy by a score of 13-7, then in the semis majored nationally ranked Darren McKnight of Michigan State 13-1. In the championship finals Gillespie shutout Mark Dickman of NAIA power Lindenwood University 4-0.
Edinboro head coach Tim Flynn noted that Gregor is not only extremely talented, but is also a hard worker, and that combination is going to make him a very successful Division I wrestler. Coach Flynn added, "Gillespie's a tiger on the mat."
Congratulations to Gregor Gillespie, our Eastern Wrestling League's Wrestler of the Week. Also, a tip of the headgear to another Edinboro grappler, 2005 NCAA finalist Shawn Bunch, who grabbed the 133-pound crown at the Eastern Michigan Open. Good job Messrs. Gillespie and Bunch!
(Editor's Note: The EWL kicks off its intra-league dual meet season at Bloomsburg on Tuesday evening November 15th, with the Pittsburgh Panthers taking on the Huskies. See you there!)
