Clarion University's Chris Horning

The EWL wrestler of the week for the week ended November 14, 2004, is Clarion University's Chris Horning. On November 14, Horning, wrestling at 157 pounds, racked up three wins at the inaugural Pennsylvania Duals held at Penn State University. At the conclusion of the event, the coaches voted Mr. Horning the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.

The Pennsylvania Duals featured eight teams, and Clarion was the only EWL team competing this year. In Clarion's first match of the day, a win over Mercyhurst, Horning scored a 17-0 tech fall (in 3:22). In the semi-final round Clarion lost the meet to Penn State, but Horning brawled his way to a 5-4 win. Clarion's third match was against Pitt-Johnstown in the wrestle-back finals for third place. The Golden Eagles dropped that match, thus finishing fourth in the Tournament, but Mr. Horning tallied his third victory of the day, a 10-3 decision.

From Syracuse, New York, Horning is a third-year junior. As a true freshman, Horning was pressed into service at 165 pounds and won 15 matches for the Golden Eagles that 2003 season. As a sophomore Chris competed at 157 pounds, was PSAC runner-up, won the 2004 EWL Tournament, went 2-2 at the NCAA's, and finished the year with an impressive 33-10 record. This wrestling season Mr. Horning has his sights set on NCAA All-American.

Congratulations to Chris Horning, voted Outstanding Wrestler at the inaugural Pennsylvania Duals, and selected as our Eastern Wrestling League's wrestler of the week! Also, a tip of the headgear to Bloomsburg University senior Chad Hoare. Mr. Hoare finished second at 197 pounds in the Oklahoma Gold Tournament (held November 13 at Brockport, NY), and in the semi finals decisioned J.D. Bergman of Ohio State, who currently is ranked second in the nation at that weight. Good job Chad Hoare!
