Dave Hoffman of Virginia Tech
The EWL wrestling season is off and rolling. On Sunday November 11, 2001, the Edinboro Fighting Scots opened their dual-meet season at home with a surprisingly close 22-15 win over Virginia Tech. The big upset in that meet was at 133 pounds where Virginia Tech’s Dave Hoffman pinned Edinboro’s nationally ranked Cory Ace in the second period (at 4:20). Dave Hoffman is a prep champ out of Pennsylvania and a true freshman at Virginia Tech, which currently has five freshmen in its starting line-up. At the time of the fall, Hoffman had racked up four takedowns and surrendered three escapes.
Dave Hoffman’s dual-meet win has earned him the Eastern Wrestling League’s Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 11, 2001.
Also, a tip of the EWL head gear to Cleveland State sophomore Stipe Miocic, who this past weekend won the 197-pound title at the 2001 Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Wrestling Classic. Coach Jack Effner’s Vikings finished a strong second to Oklahoma University in the nine-team field. Over in Morgantown, Coach Craig Turnbull’s Mountaineers were having their way at the West Virginia University Open (held 11/10/01). WVU champions at that event were Rick LaForge at 125, Joe Carr at 157 and Greg Jones at 174. Clarion University’s big guys Eric Mausser (197) and John Testa (285) won their weight classes.
Congratulations to Dave Hoffman, our EWL Wrestler of the Week and to all our Eastern Wrestling League competitors. Get on out and follow your favorite EWL team. America needs Wrestling!
