Week in Review 11/30

Our Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week, for week ended November 30, 2014, is Aaron McKinney, who is a redshirt junior at Lock Haven University.  Mr. McKinney is from Imperial, Pennsylvania, and competes for the Bald Eagles at 165 pounds.  He redshirted the 2013-14 campaign, but is back on the mats for Lock Haven this fall.

Our EWL Freshman Wrestler of the Week, for the week ended November 30, 2014, is Brock Zacherl, who is a true freshman at Clarion University.  Mr. Zacherl is from Brookville, Pennsylvania, and wrestles at 141 pounds.

On November 30, 2014, Lock Haven University hosted its annual Mat Town Open.  Led by Aaron McKinney, the Bald Eagles grabbed four Mat Town crowns.  McKinney hammered his way through the tournament, opening with a pin in 1:52, then gaining a 10-1 major decision in the quarter-finals.  In the semi-finals he racked-up an 8-0 shutout.

In the championship finals, McKinney faced Garrett Peppelman of the University of Virginia.  Peppelman, out of powerful Central Dauphin High School, was 2014 PIAA AAA champion at 160 pounds and one of the highest ranked middle-weight recruits in the nation.  McKinney defeated Peppelman 12-1 for the Mat Town title.

On November 30, 2014, Brock Zacherl wrestled unattached at Lock Haven’s Mat Town Open.  Zacherl opened with a 17-1 tech fall followed by a 10-3 decision.  In the semi finals he scored a 9-4 win, then decisioned two-time EWL place winner, Bobby Rehm of Lock Haven University, in the championship finals 9-4.

Congratulations to Aaron McKinney, our EWL Wrestler of the Week, and to Brock Zacherl, our EWL Freshman Wrestler of the Week.

Further, the EWL tips its headgear to the three other Lock Haven University grapplers (besides Aaron McKinney), who won titles at the November 30 Mat Town Open.  They are Ron Perry at 133 pounds, Elias Biddle at 157 pounds and Fred Garcia at 184.

Also, we tip our headgear to the Rider University wrestling team.  On November 30, Rider, currently ranked #25 in the nation, hosted Clarion University and the EIWA’s University of Pennsylvania.  Rider defeated Clarion 38-3 and then beat Pennsylvania 21-12, to raise their dual meet record this season to 5-1.  Good job Broncs.

Week in Review 11/23

Our Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week, for week ended November 23, 2014, is Chuck Zeisloft, who is a senior at Rider University.  Mr. Zeisloft is from Woodbury Heights, New Jersey, and competes for the Broncs at 141 pounds.

Our EWL Freshman Wrestler of the Week, for the week ended November 23, is B.J. Clagon, who is a redshirt freshman at Rider University.  Mr. Clagon is from Toms River, New Jersey, and wrestles at 149 pounds.

Rider had an outstanding wrestling week.  On November 20, 2014, the Broncs upset sixteenth-ranked Wisconsin, nipping the B1G Badgers 20-19.  The dual meet (at Rider) started at 141 pounds, and Chuck Zeisloft got the Broncs off to a winning start, decisioning the Badgers’ nationally ranked Ryan Lubeck 3-1, via a sudden-victory take down.  That take down was the first of the dual meet, and proved to be the criteria tie-breaker.  The one-point criteria addition, thanks to Mr. Zeisloft’s TD, elevated Rider from a tie to a 20-19 victory.  In that dual meet, B.J. Clagon was one of the five Rider winners.  Clagon majored his Wisconsin foe, T.J. Ruschell, by a score of 12-3.

On November 23, 2014, Rider competed in the University of Pennsylvania’s Keystone Classic, and finished second in the 14-team field.  Rider tallied 92.5 team points in The Palestra showcase event, close behind the Northwestern University final point total of 98.0.  In the Keystone Classic Chuck Zeisloft went 3-1 and finished runnerup to Todd Preston of Harvard.  Preston, who, this past season was the OW at the EIWA Tournament and finished top 12 at the 2014 NCAA’s, edged Zeisloft 3-1 in the championship finals.

B.J. Clagon also had a very good Keystone tournament.  He placed third in the event at 149, winning five of six bouts.  Clagon’s only loss, by a score of 10-8, was to the defending NCAA champion, Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern.  Rider’s veteran head coach Gary Taylor remarked, “A lot of people thought he had a take down at the end, that would have put it into overtime.  It was a great match.”

Congratulations to Chuck Zeisloft, our EWL Wrestler of the Week, and to B.J. Clagon, our EWL Freshman Wrestler of the Week!

Further, the EWL tips its headgear to four other EWL grapplers, who had strong mat weeks.  They are Rob Deutsch of Rider, Riley Shaw of Cleveland State, Chase Zemenak of Bloomsburg and Wayne Stinson of Rider.

Mr. Deutsch (133 pounds) had a 6-3 win over nationally ranked Ryan Taylor in the Broncs’ win over Wisconsin and also finished second at the Keystone Classic.  Mr. Shaw (285 pounds) racked up four wins, including two pins, on his way to a runnerup finish at the 13-team Navy Classic, held on November 22nd in Annapolis, Maryland.  Further, on November 22, 2014, Mr. Zemenak (133 pounds) and Mr. Stinson (157) each won titles at the Central New Jersey Open.

On November 8, 2014, Lock Haven University competed in the seven-team Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational Tournament (at Brockport), and finished a strong second place to the powerful Sooners of Oklahoma University.  Oklahoma finished with 173.5 team points with LHU at 154.0, trailed by Kent State University (third place), Army (fourth place), Buffalo, Bloomsburg and SUNY Brockport.  Dan Neff and Fred Garcia both helped lead the Bald Eagles to second place, by winning their weight classes.  Neff, a two-time NCAA qualifier, won the tournament title at 149 pounds, and Garcia, also a two-time NCAA qualifier, grabbed the gold at 184.  Both grapplers went 4-0 on the day.

On November 8, 2014, Chase Zemenak competed in Binghamton University’s Jonathan Kaloust Open, and won the crown at 133 pounds.  In winning his weight class, Zemenak opened with a 6-0 decision, then majored (14-4) his opponent from Lehigh University in the quarter-finals, pinned his foe from Old Dominion University in the semi-finals, and shut out (5-0) his Cleveland State opponent in the championship finals.

On November 9, 2014, Rider University competed in the University of Illinois Quad Meet.  In their three dual meets at the Quad, the Broncs were bested by the nationally ranked Illinois team, but defeated Northern Illinois University 28-9 and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville by a score of 31-9.  B.J. Clagon soldiered through the day, winning by decision, pin and tech fall, to finish 3-0.

Congratulations to Dan Neff and Fred Garcia, our EWL Wrestlers of the Week, and to Chase Zemenak and B.J. Clagon, our EWL Freshmen Wrestlers of the Week!

Also, the EWL tips its headgear to Rob Deutsch and Ben Willeford.  Mr. Deutsch, who finished top 12 at the 2014 NCAA Tournament at 125 pounds, is a junior at Rider University.  This season Deutsch is competing at 133 pounds and completed his November 8 University of Illinois Quad outing at 3-0, all by decision.

Ben Willeford, who redshirted this past season, but qualified for the 2013 NCAA’s by winning the 2013 EWL Tournament, is a senior at Cleveland State University.  This past weekend he competed in the Binghamton Open at 125 pounds, won four bouts on his way to a runnerup finish, including an opening-round decision over Lehigh’s Darian Cruz, who placed seventh at 125 pounds in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

Moreover, one final tip of the EWL headgear, this one to George Mason University.  On November 9, 2014, the Patriots marched into the 18,000-seat University of Maryland Xfinity Center, and battled to a hard-fought 17-16 criteria win over the Terps.  It’s always nice to beat a Big Ten team in a dual meet!
