Edinboro Wins Tenth Straight over Clarion, 34-7
CLARION, Pa. (1/18/08) – Edinboro opened its Eastern Wrestling League season with a 34-7 win at Clarion on Friday night in front of 1,500 fans at Tippin Gymnasium. The Fighting Scots, ranked 14th in the latest USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Top 25, won eight of ten matches to improve to 5-2 overall. Clarion fell to 6-8 and 0-1 in the EWL, as Edinboro defeated the Golden Eagles for the tenth straight time.
Edinboro won the first two bouts, beginning with a 10-1 major decision by Eric Morrill at 125 lbs. The sophomore improved to 13-6. Ricky Deubel brought his season record to 17-10 at 133 lbs. with a win by fall over Tony Lascari at 4:00, giving the Fighting Scots a 10-0 lead.
Clarion closed the gap to 10-7 with wins in the next two matches. Sal Lascari posted a 17-8 major decision over Ryan Morgan at 141 lbs., dropping Morgan to 7-7 while filling in for injured starter Torsten Gillespie. Hadley Harrison followed with a 3-1 decision over Daryl Cocozzo (23-9) at 149 lbs., as the Golden Eagle registered the winning takedown with seven seconds remaining.
That would be it for Clarion, as Edinboro won the final six bouts. Gregor Gillespie, ranked third by InterMat at 157 lbs., improved to 22-2 overall and 96-8 for his career with an 11-2 major decision over Travis Uncapher. Gillespie led 4-0 after one period thanks to a takedown and two-point nearfall, then went up 7-0 after two periods with a three-point nearfall move. He added a reversal in the third period.
After 16th-ranked Jarrod King won by forfeit at 165 lbs. to go to 21-6, and 15th-ranked Phil Moricone was able to avoid an upset attempt by Mario Morelli with a 2-1 decision at 174 lbs. He used a third period reversal to come up with the winning point and improve to 16-8.
Freshman Chris Honeycutt, ranked 17th at 184 lbs., fell behind Scott Joseph 5-1 after one period, but then roared back to record a 13-8 decision. He still trailed 7-5 after two periods, but had a big third period with two near falls and a takedown. Honeycutt is now 19-5.
Pat Bradshaw picked up his 20th win and is now 20-9 at 197 lbs. after a 4-2 decision against Jamie Luckett. Joey Fendone, ranked 14th at heavyweight, recorded his fifth fall of the season, pinning Roman Husam at 1:58.
Edinboro won’t have much time to savor the win, as the Fighting Scots are back in action on Saturday night, hosting Bloomsburg. The EWL match gets underway at 7:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
