Edinboro 26 Cleveland State 15

CLEVELAND, Oh. (February 9, 2008) - Edinboro made it 17 straight wins in Eastern Wrestling League competition with a hard-fought 26-15 win at Cleveland State.  The match took place at Woodling Gymnasium.  The victory improved the 14th-ranked Fighting Scots to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the EWL.  The Vikings fell to 4-9 and 0-3, respectively.
The match started with a big upset, as 15th ranked Phil Moricone lost by fall to Cleveland State's J.T. Miller at 3:27 at 174 lbs.  The loss dropped Moricone to 18-9 on the season, but it was the first time he lost by more than two points, and also his first defeat to an unranked grappler.  Miller improved to 21-14 with his seventh fall.
Chris Honeycutt closed the match to 6-4 as the true freshman, from St. Edward's High School in Cleveland, returned home and handed Chris Hahn an 18-7 defeat.  The victory boosted Honeycutt, who is ranked 17th, to 21-5.  Hahn was the Vikings' regular a year ago at 184 lbs., but was making his first appearance this year.
Pat Bradshaw gave the Fighting Scots a 9-6 lead with a 17-2 technical fall at 5:08 over D.J. Cummins, giving the sophomore a 23-9 record at 197 lbs.  Cummins moved up from 184 lbs. to face Bradshaw.
In possibly the most anticipated match of the evening, Joey Fendone and Cleveland State's Rashard Goff battled into sudden victory at heavyweight before Goff came away with a 4-2 decision.  Fendone, ranked 14th, had beaten Goff in two out of three bouts a year ago, but the Viking has now won the last two meetings between the two.  Fendone fell to 13-6 with the loss, while Goff is 17-7.
Edinboro picked up wins in the next two matches to go up 18-9.  Eric Morrill improved to 14-7 at 125 lbs. with a win by fall at 4:01 over Ryan Riggs.  Ricky Deubel, another Cleveland-area wrestler from Kenston High School, followed with a 9-2 decision over Josh Palivoda at 133 lbs.  The victory gives Deubel a 20-10 record, the third straight year the junior has won 20 matches.
Cleveland State's Hurley brothers  came back to narrow the score to 18-15 with a pair of decisions in the next two bouts.  Mike Hurley edged  freshman Torsten Gillespie, who was returning missing almost six weeks with a broken finger.  The two traded first period takedowns, but Hurley used a second period takedown for the 141 lb. win.  Gillespie fell to 16-12 with the loss.
Ryan Hurley followed with a 10-4 decision at 149 lbs. over Joe Bockmore, who was filling in for starter Daryl Cocozzo.  Bockmore was making his first appearance in a dual, and now has an 11-8 record.  Hurley is a three-time NCAA qualifier and is now 13-9.
Gregor Gillespie secure the win with an impressive 20-0 technical fall (3:31) at 157 lbs. over Rob Michaels.  It marked Gillespie's 12th win by technical fall this year, and gave the Fighting Scots a 23-15 lead.  The junior improved to 25-2 and moved to within one win of 100 for his career as he dominated the Viking redshirt freshman, who is 23-7.  Gillespie came in ranked third.
16th-ranked Jarrod King closed out the match with an impressive 7-2 decision over Jason Effner at 165 lbs.  King won his eighth straight and 16th in the last 17 matches to improve to 24-6.  Effner is now 23-8.
Edinboro returns to action with back-to-back matches this week, beginning with a Valentine's Day match on February 14 at seventh-ranked Ohio State.  The Fighting Scots then return from Columbus, OH and host the University at Buffalo the next evening, Friday, February 15.
