Edinboro Wins 15th Consecutive EWL Match with 25-9 Win over Bloomsburg
EDINBORO, Pa. (1/19/08) – Edinboro made it back-to-back Eastern Wrestling League wins on Saturday night, as the Fighting handed Bloomsburg a 25-9 defeat at McComb Fieldhouse. Coupled with a 34-7 win over Clarion on Friday night, the Fighting Scots, ranked 14th in latest USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Top 25, are now 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the EWL. Bloomsburg is 3-5-1 and 0-2, respectively.
The Fighting Scots have now won 15 straight EWL matches dating back to the 2004-05 season, and have not lost in their last 16 EWL matches. Edinboro lost two of the first three matches, but then won the next six bouts before losing at heavyweight.
Bloomsburg opened the evening with a win at 125 lbs. The anticipated matchup between 11th-ranked Mike Sees and Eric Morrill, who met in the PSAC finals, did not take place, as Sees was out with a minor injury. It didn’t matter, as backup Ian Moser handled Morrill, 12-6, dropping Morrill to 13-7.
Ricky Deubel answered with a 7-5 win in overtime over Jason Guffey in another rematch of the PSAC title match. Deubel won the first meeting by a 12-5 decision. The Edinboro junior opened the first period with a pair of takedowns, with Guffey escaping each time for a 4-2 lead after one period. Guffey would grab a 5-4 lead after two periods, but Deubel would send the match into overtime with a third-period escape. He posted the winning takedown with 44 seconds left in overtime to improve to 18-10.
The Huskies took a 6-3 lead thanks to a 3-0 win for Darren Kern over Ryan Morgan at 149 lbs. Morgan, filling in for injured starter Torsten Gillespie, fell to 7-8. Kern posted the lone takedown in the second period.
Edinboro’s run of six straight wins started at 149 lbs., as Daryl Cocozzo (24-9) came up with one of his better wins this year with a 9-1 major decision over Dennis Bermudez (20-7). Cocozzo led 4-0 after one period and 6-0 after two, then added an escape and a takedown in the third period.
In one of the more anticipated matches of the evening, third-ranked Gregor Gillespie went up against 17th-ranked Matt Moley of Bloomsburg at 157 lbs. The two met in the PSAC finals and Gillespie posted an impressive 12-0 major decision. It was much closer this time around, as Moley wrestled conservatively and kept the match scoreless through two periods. Gillespie finally picked up the winning takedown with 16 seconds remaining for the 3-0 win. The Edinboro junior is now 23-2 and 97-8 for his career. Moley fell to 24-5.
Edinboro took a 13-6 lead after another tight bout at 165 lbs. Jarrod King, ranked 16th, edged Rickey Schmelyun, 2-1. King improved to 22-6 thanks to a first-period takedown. Schmelyun now has a 20-13 ledger.
Phil Moricone, ranked 15th, improved to 17-8 at 174 lbs. thanks to an 11-2 major decision over Brian Shaw. The junior took a 2-0 lead after one with a takedown. An escape, takedown and three near-fall points made it 8-0 after two periods. Moricone would add a third period takedown.
Freshman Chris Honeycutt continued his impressive run with a 9-1 major decision over Jesse Hasseman at 184 lbs. Ranked 17th, Honeycutt recorded a takedown late in the first period for a 2-0 lead. He added three near-fall points in the second period, ending that session with a 5-1 lead. In the third, he had an escape and a takedown. Honeycutt is now 20-5.
Pat Bradshaw made it six straight wins with an 11-0 major decision against Eric Shaw at 197 lbs. The sophomore boosted his record to 21-9 thanks to a strong start. He led 5-0 after one period on the strength of a takedown and three back points. An escape and another takedown left the score 8-0 after two periods, and Bradshaw closed with a takedown in the third.
Joey Fendone, ranked 14th, fell to ninth-ranked Mike Spaid in the heavyweight match by a 2-0 score. It marked the second time this year and fifth time in the last two years that the big Husky shut out Fendone. The lone points came in the first period on a takedown. Fendone fell to 12-5, while Spaid reached 30 wins for the second straight year at 30-4.
