Bloomsburg Knocks Off Delaware State and East Stroudsburg in Wrestling Action
BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team beat Delaware State and East Stroudsburg on Sunday afternoon at Nelson Field House. The Huskies defeated Delaware State 52-0, and knocked East Stroudsburg, 42-6. The Huskies finish the regular season with a record of 8-7-1. Before the matches the Huskies honored the two senior members of its team, Mike Sees and Mike Spaid.
Delaware St.:
125- Seventh ranked Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) won by forfeit.
133- Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run) picked up a victory in relatively quick fashion after a pinning Delaware State's Kelvin Walford in the first minute and half of their bout. Guffey got off to a quick start with a takedown in the first minute of the match, then picked up another takedown 30 seconds later to take a 4-1 lead. Eight seconds later, Guffey pinned Walford to pick up the win.
141- Darren Kern (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomenville) won by forfeit.
149- George Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/Riverside) picked up a win with a 10-6 decision over Matt Cathell. Hickman started the match off with a takedown at the 1:50 mark of the first period and controlled a 2-1 lead after one. In the second, Hickman picked up another takedown in the fame's first 10 seconds to make the match score 4-1. Hickman picked up another takedown with 52 seconds left in the second, but Cathell fought back in the final moments of the period with a takedown of his own that made the score 6-5 in favor of Hickman going into the third. In that third period, Hickman put the match away with two takedowns to win 10-6.
157- 19th ranked Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) won by forfeit.
165- Rickey Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) defeated Brandon Gardner 13-4. The match started out with Schmelyun recording a takedown in the bout's first 20 seconds and then another takedown at the 2:20 mark to take a 4-1 lead. Gardner, however, would come back to tie the match after four after recording a takedown with 35 seconds left in the period. Schmelyun would end the period on a high note after recording another takedown with five seconds left in the period to make it 6-4 Schmelyun going into the second. From there, Schmelyun controlled the match, as he picked up an escape point in the second, then two near falls in the third to make the final tally 13-4.
174- Brian Shaw (Holidaysburg/Holidaysburg) made quick work of Kyle Skinner after picking up a pin fall victory 53 seconds into the first period.
184- Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) won by forfeit.
197- Eric Shaw (Holidaysburg/Holidaysburg) knocked off Shawn Nowrey 9-4. Shaw got off to a quick start in the match with two takedowns in the first period to grab a 4-2 lead after one. In the second, Shaw recorded another takedown to make the score 6-4 going into the third period. In the third, Shaw began the period by recording an escape point, then ended the match with another takedown that made the final score 9-4 in favor of Shaw.
285- 10th ranked Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) won by forfeit over
Eric Sewell.
East Stroudsburg:
125-Mike Sees took control of his match with Matthew Benedetti right from the start and scored six takedowns in the opening period and led 18-7 after three minutes. Sees continued his dominance in the second period and went on to score a 24-9, win by technical fall.
133-After no scoring in the first period, BU's Jason Guffey escaped to start the second frame which turned out to be the only scoring of that period. In the third period, East Stroudsburg's Matt Swallow escaped to start the period with no further scoring. In overtime, with time running out, Guffey rolled Swallow on his on back and picked up the win by fall.
141-East Stroudsburg's Sean Carr led 2-1 against Darren Kern after one period picking up a takedown in the opening seconds of the match. In the second period, Carr escaped to begin the frame with no further scoring. Kern escaped to start the third period, Carr picked up a takedown with a minute left followed by a Kern escape to make it a 5-3 score which is how it finished.
149-Bloomsburg's George Hickman scored two first period takedowns over Jesse Dunn to lead 4-1 after three minutes. Hickman scored two more takedowns to one for one for Dunn and led 8-5 going to the third. In the final period, Hickman scored three more takedowns in the third and won 16-8.
157-Bloomsburg's Matt Moley picked up a win by technical fall over Kyle Heselpoth in 3:54 by an 18-2 score. Moley scored four takedowns and picked up 11 near-fall points during the bout.
165-Ricky Schmelyun picked up a win by fall over Joe Schick in 2:04.
174-Bloomsburg's Brian Shaw won by forfeit.
184-Bloomsburg's Jesse Hasseman won by forfeit.
197-After a scoreless first period, East Stroudsburg's Dave Williams picked up two takedowns and a reversal in the final two periods to post an 8-4 win.
285-Bloomsburg's Mike Spaid jumped out to a 5-0 first period lead after a
takedown and a three-point near fall. Spaid went on to post a 9-1 win over Chris
Birchler.
