Bloomsburg Rolls Past Binghamton In Wrestling

        BLOOMSBURG­- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team posted a 38-3 win over Binghamton University Saturday in a non-conference meet in Bloomsburg.

        At 125 pounds Bloomsburg’s Ian Moser (Dover, DE/Cesar Rodney) controlled the first period action against the Bearcats Tyler Malmberg with two takedowns and picked up three more in the second period for an 10-4 lead. Malmberg got a takedown of his own in the third period and got back to within 12-8 late in the match. Moser, though ,hung on for a 13-8 win.

        At 133 pounds Binghamton’s Mike Kleeman got a quick take down to open the match with Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run), Guffey came back and escaped, got a takedown and late in the first period, a three-point near fall to lead 6-2 after one period. The only scoring of the second period was a takedown from Guffey giving him an 8-2 advantage. Guffey closed out the match by getting an escape and a takedown for a 13-3 victory.

        At 141 Binghamton’s Anwar Goeres opened the match with two takedowns and a three-point near fall to lead 7-2 over George Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/Riverside). Hickman rallied and closed back to within 7-6 early in the second period with his second takedown of the match. Goeres later made it 11-6 with another takedown and second near fall. In the third period, Hickman rallied and closed with a flurry of takedowns to make it 15-13 with less than 20 seconds left in the match. Goeres, though, hung on for the win.

        In the 149 pound bout, Bloomsburg’s Dennis Bermudez (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) won by fall in 5:32. Bermudez started slow in the match leading 2-1 after one period and 8-1 after two periods. In the third, Bermudez got a takedown, then, closed out the match with the pin 28 seconds into the period.

        At 157 pounds the Huskies Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) led 5-1 after one period with a takedown and a three-point near fall. Binghamton’s Nate Patterson got the only scoring of the second period at the buzzer when he recorded a takedown. In the third period Moley regained control getting a takedown and a two-point near fall and posted a 10-4 victory.

        At 165 pounds, Bloomsburg’s Rickey Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) posted a win by fall in 1:23 to give the Huskies a 22-3 lead in the match.

        At 174 pounds, Bloomsburg’s Brian Shaw (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) led 2-0 after one period and 5-1 after two periods. In the third period, Shaw picked up two more takedowns and a point for riding time to win 10-4.

        In the 184 pound match, Bloomsburg’s Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) got a first period takedown and a second period escape to lead 3-0 heading into the third period over Anthony Esposito. In the third, Hasseman got three takedowns and won 11-2.

        At 197 pounds Eric Shaw (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) got five takedowns during his bout with Matt Berretta and posted a 13-6 win.

        At 285 pounds, Bloomsburg’s Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) dominated action from the start and posted a win by fall in 1:50 for a 38-3 win for the Huskies.
