RIDER 37 CLARION 9
(CLARION, PA.): Rider jumped out to a 16-0 lead and never looked back as the Broncs defeated Clarion in an NCAA Division I Dual meet on Saturday by a final of 37-9.
Held at Clarion’s Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium, The Golden Eagles now fall to 7-9 overall, while Rider raised its record to 9-6.
The match opened at 133 with Rider’s Brian Polashuk holding on to defeat Sal Lascari 4-3. Lascari tied the match with 30-seconds left with a takedown, but released Polashuk and could not score again.
Rider’s Don Fisch majored Greg Lewis 13-4 at 141, and Mike Kessler defeated Hadley Harrison 9-6 at 149 to give the Broncs a 10-0 lead.
Harrison actually took a 4-2 lead with ten seconds left I the second, but Kessler reversed Harrison to his back for a 5-point move and a 7-4 lead before the period ended. A late Harrison third period closed to bout to 8-6, but Kessler prevailed 9-6.
Ahead 16-0 going into 165, Clarion freshman Mario Morelli (DuBois) won his second bout in two nights defeating Rob Morrison 10-4. Trailing 2-1 late in the first period, Morelli notched a takedown and a 3-2 lead. In the second period he posted an escape, stall point and a takedown for a 7-2 lead. After being reversed in the third, he responded with an escape and a takedown for a 10-4 win. Marion upped his season record to 13-8.
At 174 Clarion’s Dominic Ross challenged #8 ranked Doug Umbehauer before losing 9-4. Trailing 6-1 in the third, Ross escape and scored a double leg tackle takedown to draw within 6-4, but after releasing Umbehauer, the Rider veteran scored a late counter takedown to post a 9-4 win.
Clarion scored its second win at heavyweight when AJ Brooks pinned Nick Ciufo at 3:44. Brooks ha a 7-0 lead in the second period when he pinned the Rider heavyweight. Brooks is now 14-8 on the season.
Clarion returns to action on Tuesday when the Golden Eagles host Pitt at 7:30pm.
