Bloomsburg Wrestling Competes at Northeast Duals

BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team went 1-3 at the Journeymen/BRUTE Northeast Collegiate Duals on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies defeated Binghamton 40-10 while losing to Central Michigan 23-12, Penn 24-9 and Hofstra 27-15.
In the match against Hofstra, Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run), won in the 125 weight class, to pick up his second win of the day. Nate Shirk (Middleburg/Middleburg) also picked up a second win at the 184 weight class as well as Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) in the heavyweight class.
Against Binghamton, Bloomsburg won the first six matches to take a 30-0 lead over the Bearcats. Guffey, Ricky Donald (Millville/Millville), Darren Kern (Pennsburg/Upper Perkioman), Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford), Dennis Bermudez (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) and Rick Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) each picked up victories. Binghamton sandwiched wins at the 174- and 197-pound weight classes around a victory by Shirk to get on the board but a forfeit at the heavyweight class gave Bloomsburg the 40-10 win.
Against Central Michigan, the Huskies got two early wins from Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) and Donald to go up 6-0. Sees picked up an 8-1 win over Luke Smith while Donald got the 6-4 victory over CMU's Matt Steintrager. The Chippewa's Eric Kruger tied the team score at 6-6 with a pin over Tony Curto (Easton/Wilson Area) at 141-pounds.
Against Penn, Bloomsburg once again took the lead 3-0 on a 12-10 overtime victory for Sees. However, Penn won seven of the next nine matches to get the 24-9 victory.
The Huskies move to 1-4 (0-1 EWL) on the year and will next be in action on
December 3rd at the Penn State Open.
