BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team lost a close match 18-15 to Drexel University on Sunday afternoon at the Nelson Field House. Five Huskies picked up wins but it wasn't enough to give Bloomsburg the team victory.
Tenth-ranked Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) got Bloomsburg on the board with a 6-4 win over Steve Mytych of Drexel at 125 lbs. Sees took the early 2-0 lead in the first period on a takedown while in the second, Mytych got a point off of an escape to close the score to 2-1. However, Sees pulled away in the third and took the match 6-4 to give Bloomsburg a 3-0 team lead.
After a scoreless first period in the 133-lb bout, Bloomsburg's Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run) took a 3-0 lead over Billy Martin on an escape and a takedown in the second. In the third, Martin added an escape to pull to within one at 3-2 and then scored on a takedown with seven seconds left to win the match 4-3 and tie the team score at 3-3.
At 141 lbs, Darren Kern (Pennsburg/Upper Perkioman) picked up a 3-2 win over Drexel's Dave Gilio. Kern fell behind 2-1 in the first period but tied it up with an escape early in the second. Kern controlled the third and got a point from riding time to take the match 3-2 and give Bloomsburg a 6-3 lead.
Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) got a sudden victory overtime win at 149-lbs, winning the match 3-1 over Drexel's Mark Cartella. Moley took the lead in the second on an escape but Cartella countered with an escape in the third to knot the score at 1-1. In the extra period, Moley's takedown gave him the 3-1 win and extended the Bloomsburg lead to 9-3.
Drexel tied the team score at 9-9 with a pin (6:08) from ninth-ranked Ryan Hluschak over Dennis Bermudez (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) at 157 lbs.
At 165 pounds, the Dragons took their first lead of the night with a 6-3 win from Billy Haydt over Ricky Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs). Haydt took a 4-1 lead in the first and then extended his lead to 6-1 after the second period. Schmelyun battled back to within 6-3 in the third but fell short as Haydt took the match and Drexel took a 12-9 lead.
Nick Kozar pushed Drexel's lead to 14-9 with a 6-3 win over Andrew Jordan (Newark, DE/St. Marks) at 174 lbs. Jordan fell behind early and battled back to within three in the third, but Kozar held on for the win. A team point was deducted from Drexel for unsportsmanlike conduct.
At 184 lbs, Nate Shirk (Middleburg/Middleburg) got a 9-2 win over Brian Stouffer to close the team score to 14-12. Shirk took an early 2-0 lead in the first period and dominated the rest of the match for the 9-2 win.
In the 197-lb contest, Jon Oplinger nearly put the match out of reach for the Huskies with a major decision win over P.J. DiStefano (Whitehall/Whitehall-Coplay). Oplinger's 16-6 win gave the Dragons an 18-12 team lead.
At heavyweight, Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) defeated Drexel's Chris Cowen 7-5 but it wasn't enough to give Bloomsburg the win with the final match score 18-15 in favor of the Dragons.
With the loss, the Huskies fall to 10-9 on the year while Drexel improved to 16-10. Bloomsburg is back in action at the Nelson Field House on Friday, February 16th for the last home match of the year against Lock Haven.
