Bloomsburg 39 Clarion 3
(Clarion, PA.): Bloomsburg won nine of ten matches on Friday night and defeated Clarion 39-3 in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet.
Held at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium, Clarion dropped to 7-8 overall and 0-3 in the EWL. Bloomsburg raised its record to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the EWL.
With the match starting at 149, Bloomsburg opened with two major decisions to jump to an 8-0 lead. The Huskies Matt Moley majored Hadley Harrison 12-4 at 149 and Dennis Bermudez notched a 14-5 major over Lucas Christopher at 157.
Clarion gained its only win of the night at 165 when freshman Mario Morelli defeated Rickey Schmelyun 4-0. Morelli used a second period reversal , a third period stall point and riding time of 3:02 to gain his 4-0 decision. Morelli rode Schmelyun the entire third period, while his win avenged a 4-2 loss at the PSAC’s last weekend.
At 174 Clarion’s Dominic Ross and Bloom’s Andrew Jordan went to overtime tied at 4-4. Jordan posted a takedown in overtime and won 6-4.
The Golden Eagles came close at heavyweight and 141, but could not gain another victory. Clarion heavyweight AJ Brooks took #12 rated Mike Spaid to overtime before losing 7-5. Brooks led 3-1 after the first period, fell behind 4-3 in the second, but rallied with a third period reversal to tie at 5-5. In overtime Brooks shot a single leg, but Spaid countered for the winning score.
At 141 Greg Lewis lost a 7-5 decision to Darren Kern. Lewis pulled to within 6-5 in the second period, then rode Kern most of the third but was unable to score any points. Cutting Kern loose with 20-seconds left, he tried for a takedown late but fell short and lost 7-5.
Clarion returns to the mat on Saturday afternoon when the Golden Eagles host Rider at Tippin Gym at 1pm. Bloomsburg travels to Cleveland State on Saturday night for its next dual.
