Big Run Dooms Vikings In 18-13 Loss
Hurley brothers, Crenshaw and Hahn win for CSU

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bloomsburg won six of seven after Cleveland State took a 6-0
lead to beat the Vikings, 18-13, Saturday afternoon at Woodling Gym. The loss
ends a six-meet winning streak for CSU and send the Vikings to 9-3 and 2-1 in
EWL action. Bloomsburg improves to 10-7 and 3-1.
After junior Ryan Hurley and Victer Crenshaw won decisions at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, the Huskies' Ricky Schmelyun won, 10-4, over Marcus Effner at 165 pounds to start a run that saw Bloomsburg outscore CSU, 18-4, over a period of seven bouts.
"It was a hard fought battle against one of our rival teams. I thought we competed hard," head coach Jack Effner said. "We just got outwrestled."
Down 1-0 heading into the third period, Hurley (23-8) escaped from bottom to tie the bout 1-1. With both wrestlers neutral down the stretch, Hurley shot a double-leg and got the match-winning takedown with 0:10 remaining to win, 3-1. Crenshaw (24-6) overwhelmed Dennis Bermudez in the opening minutes of the 157-pound bout, taking an 8-0 lead with a takedown and six near fall points. Bermudez controlled the rest of the match, using an escape and three takedowns to pull within 9-7. Bermudez rallied to tie the bout at 11 in the final seconds, but Crenshaw controlled riding time to capture the 12-11 decision and give CSU a 6-0 lead.
After Schmelyun pulled Bloomsburg to 6-3, the Huskies won decisions at 174 and 184 pounds.
After leading 2-1 in the first period in the 174-pound bout, sophomore Nate Kmetz (4-18) used two escapes to battle Bloomsburg's Andrew Jordan to a 4-4 tie late in the third period. With both wrestlers neutral, Jordan scored a takedown with 0:30 on the clock and added a riding time point to win, 7-4. Senior David Gilkey (15-15) dropped a 13-9 decision at 184 pounds to Nate Shirk in a match that saw Gilkey lead, 5-1, early in the bout. The decision at 184 gave Bloomsburg its first lead at 9-6.
"A lot of matches could have gone either way," Effner said. "We have to get those close wons to go our way next time."
Sophomore Chris Hahn, who scored a pin to lead CSU to a win over Lock Haven Friday night, won a 13-5 major decision over P.J. DiStefano at 197 pounds to put the Vikings up, 10-9
CSU would not lead again.
After Mike Spaid defeated Rashard Goff (22-12), 4-0, in the heavyweight bout Mike Sees (125) and Rickey Donald (133) beat juniors Ryan Riggs (8-12) and David Armstrong (12-10), respectively, to put the match out of reach.
Junior Mike Hurley (18-7) won a 5-2 decision over Darren Kern in the meet's last match.
The Vikings travel to eighth-ranked Edinboro on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and host Clarion on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 3:00 p.m.
